WHAT IS A DENTAL/OPG?

A Dental/OPG is a procedure that uses X-rays (a form of electromagnetic energy) to view and produce images of the jaws.

DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

Appointments for Dental/OPG’s are not required. Although the scan itself will not take very long, most dental/OPG appointments may require you to attend for as long as 10-15 minutes. Have any metal around the head or face area (e.g. piercings,necklaces, dentures etc) Have any information you believe may be relevant to your examination.

WHO WILL DO MY DENTAL/OPG?

A qualified and specially trained radiographer will always be present during your X-ray.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING MY DENTAL/OPG?

You will be asked to face the Dental/OPG machine and bite on a plastic disposable tube. One of our radiographer staff will position you to ensure the best images are possible and that you are always in their full view. Once positioned, the Dental/OPG machine will rotate around your head to collect the data. The procedure normally only takes a few seconds. As dental/OPG’s are non invasive and safe, patients can resume normal activity after having one.

Autoclaves commonly sterilise by exposing its charge (items to be sterilised) to elevated temperatures of 121 to 134ºC under pressure of 15 to 30 psi, for a holding time of anywhere between three to 30 minutes. Please note that the three to thirty minutes time is the holding time at the set elevated temperature and not the total process or cycle time. Total cycle time would be far greater. The combination of the three lethal parameters of time, temperature and steam, deliver a powerful kill rate which even the hardest of bacteria find hard to survive. This effective and yet clean method of lethality is unmatched by any of the other methods of sterilisation.

Dental radiographs, commonly referred to as X-ray films, or informally, X-rays, are pictures of the teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues to screen for and help identify problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. X-ray pictures can show cavities,cancerous or benign masses, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom;and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination. Dental X-rays may also be done as follow-up after dental treatments A radiographic image is formed by a controlled burst of X-ray radiation which penetrates oral structures at different levels, depending on varying anatomical densities, before striking the film or sensor. Teeth appear lighter because less radiation penetrates them to reach the film. Dental caries, infections and other changes in the bone density, and the periodontal ligament, appear darker because X-rays readily penetrate these less dense structures. Dental restorations (fillings, crowns) may appear lighter or darker, depending on the density of the material.
